This morning the weather was phenomenal. Low 80’s, the birds were singing outside. My Jack Russells were in the back yard tooling about. The oldest one, Taz rarely barks any more, but the younger girl, Tessa, makes up for it. Non stop barking.

I had to get something down at the corner drug store, so I hopped into my pollen covered Honda CRV that is supposed to be royal blue in color, but today was green. I cranked the radio up to eleven. They were playing “That Smell” on Rock 101, so that got my day off to a brilliant start.

As I drove down North Main, everybody and her brother was outside. Some working in the yard, some jogging, some walking down the sidewalk. I spotted a thirty-something male walking a Jack Russell that looked just like our Tessa.

Suddenly, a ‘72 Gran Torino flew around me at about 80 mph. Now, this is in a 40 mph speed zone. Many times the Heat sits parked in a cluster of trees just off the street, but not today. The Gran Torino obviously had a Thrush muffler, as it sounded as loud as a Zeppelin concert. Mind you, when I was a teenager, I would have deemed that royally cool. Now, it just rattles my last nerve.

After the dust settled, I looked to my left to see a quite pretty fifty-year-old lady in white shorts, walking her own Jack Russell on a leash. Wow. The neighborhood has gone to the dogs. And they are all terriers. Suddenly, in my bizarre mind, I saw former Prez Bush, and the was talking about “the war on terriers.” Yeah. I know.

I made it to Rite Aid, which is less that two miles from my house, and pulled into the parking lot. Absolutely empty. I wheeled up to the front door and parked, swung my door open and bam!

A young girl, less than 20 years of age whipped her Nissan in at lightning speed and hit my door. Thank God she hit the brakes too. The bottom corner of my door punched a nice little hole in her front bumper area. I don’t know what you call it these days, since there’s really not a bumper anymore.

She got out and bent over and rubbed the hole in the fiberglass with her hand. “That’s not bad,” she said. “Is your car okay?”

I shook my head yes, and she said “Good. This is my Mama;s car. I just want to pretend this never happened.”

I never said a word. Didn’t bother me. It didn’t hurt my Honda at all, and I was happy not to spend the next hour with Police talking about the tiny hole in this girl’s bumper and how it was most likely my fault, because I had road cases and other gear in the back of the CRV that would label me as one of those "no good Southern Rock musicians."

I got what I needed at the drug store, and driving back home I could not believe my eyes. Another guy, out walking a Jack Russell terrier. Could it be something straight out of The X-Files? Could Jack Russells be taking over the planet? What a way to die. To be licked to death by thousands of tiny puppies. Spooky.

The other night I saw some pretty amazing things on the old idiot box. Once in a while, it will surprise me like that.

Just flipping channels, I happened across the Sundance channel and a show called Spectacle, hosted by British pop artist and noted genre-crosser Elvis Costello. Costello was hosting an old fashioned “guitar pull,” sometimes known as “songwriters in the round,” with a mighty eclectic, yet superbly talented group of musicians.

First off, we had Roseanne Cash, daughter of Johnny Cash who at one time crossed over between the country and pop charts with her unique songs and great songwriting. Then there was pop sensation (and daughter of Beatles guru Ravi Shankar) Nora Jones. Beside her sat one of my true heroes, and one of the best damned songwriters every to breathe in the Nashville air, Kris Kristofferson. Rounding out the lineup was another talented song stylist, and one of the artists who helped me get through my college years, John Mellencamp.

Now, the show opened with Elvis happily leading everyone in a Johnny Cash tune, “Big River.” Mellencamp played one of my favorites of his, “Small Town,” and Nora Jones played a song she co-wrote with Hank Williams. Yep. It’s true. Somehow, she was chosen to finish one of several incomplete songs left behind by the father of country music. Elvis turned in some amazing harmony vocals and lead guitar. Heck, Costello loves his country music. Almost Blue is always in my top 40 albums at any given moment. I thought I would fall out of my chair when Kris followed with my all time favorite tune of his, “Sunday Morning Coming Down.” And that was just the first go round. It just got better and better. If you get a chance to check it out, I’m sure it will be repeated.

After that I turned it to HBO for a documentary called Trouble The Water, all about New Orleans and hurricane Katrina, one family and neighborhood in particular. It is a powerful documentary and one everybody reading this should see. ‘Nuff said. Buffalo says, “check it out.”
