Indie Record Store Day: Horizon Records Still Rocks
Posted: Apr 18, 2009I just got back home from a visit to Horizon Records, my favorite home tome indie record store. They were having one of their big sales in honor of Independent Record Store day today, with a tent set up outside and great old used LP’s going for 50-cents to four bucks. Slashed prices on used CD’s, books, 45’s, DVD’s and much more. The new releases were all on sale too, including Already Live by The Derek Trucks Band, a new CD available only at indie record stores.
I wrote a little about Horizon last year at this time, but I just can’t say enough about my old friend Gene Berger who opened the store in Morgan Manor over on Pleasantburg Drive in 1975. Since then, he has relocated twice, once to a store on South Pleasantburg and then to the corner of North Main and Stone Avenue, about two miles from my front door.
The space used to be an old gas station, but now Horizon shares it with The Bohemian Cafe, a nice restaurant that features all sorts of great concerts in conjunction with Berger, a man who has been bringing great music to Greenville as a promoter for years.
I first visited Horizon in 1976 when I was a senior in high school, but became a “regular” in 1979, when Brad, who was one of the clerks, turned me on to Kate Bush. During those next two years I bought everything I could get my hands on that was Kate related. Of course, I was also making frequent trips to Atlanta where I shared my love with Wax ‘n Facts, another great indie store that opened in 1976.
Horizon was there when I discovered my love for Bruce Springsteen after The River, and went on to purchase the whole Boss back catalog. They were there for my new wave phase, when I thought Elvis Costello’s Get Happy was the most brilliant record ever and I bought Public Image Limited’s film can record. They were there when I got into jazz for a couple of years and bought lots of Miles Davis, Grover Washington, Jr., The Marsalis brothers - and of course they have sold me a gazillion Southern Rock records. Everything from Marshall Tucker and The Allman Brothers to Cowboy.
And then there was my Frank Zappa phase. One Gene could really understand. He has always kept a special section just for Frank CD’s.
Berger has had so many great instore performance i can barely remember who they were. I do remember a great one by Del McCoury Band. They were awesome.
I have been a Horizon Records customer for over 33 years now, and will continue to be. The huge chains can never match the experiences nor the deals I have found at my own, home town independent record store - Horizon, we love ya.
