Super Bowl Sunday Reflections
Posted: Feb 01, 2009There’s cold beer in the fridge and Bruce Springsteen’s new album is wafting through the air. Only four more hours until kickoff, and the excitement is mounting. Not only am I stoked to see The E-Street Band at halftime and the always fun commercials, but I hope to see a mighty fine ball game as well.
The half-time shows of the past have been pretty good, especially ZZ Top, although the lip syncing was kinda cheesy, Aerosmith was good, and dare I say, Michael Jackson put on a killer show, although Prince outdid ‘em all, and without a costume malfunction.
But I predict a half time show for the record books. The Boss is on his A-Game, 110 percent. As good or better than ever. I just hope he plays “Born to Run.”
Now, don’t get me wrong. I am not just about the music. Hey, I am a Southern boy. We breathe football.
Super Bowl 43 should be a good contest. It will decide whether the Steelers take home their sixth Lombardi trophy or Arizona earns their first. My prediction? Sure. Steelers 24 Cards 14.
Last year’s game with The Giants defeating The Patriots was a good one, and I remember 2006 when the Steelers beat the Seahawks as another fine football game.
The 2004 Super Bowl nail biter saw my Panthers lose to New England - I don’t want to talk about it.
In 1990 I was taking a cue from my Dad (a California boy), and had become a Montana and Rice fanatic. Joe Montana and the 49ers put a hurtin’ on Denver 55 -10 in one of my top three Super Bowl games ever. But to me, the childhood memories are still the best. Me and Dad in front of a black and white TV with rabbit ears.
Back in 1976, I was a senior in high school when The Steelers beat the Cowboys for their second Bowl win in a row on Terry Bradshaw's 64-yard touchdown pass to Lynn Swann. What a sweet game that was. Still, my first Super Bowl remains my all time favorite.
Super Bowl 2 back in 1968 was my first exposure to the big contest. At the age of ten, I missed the first one, but my Dad and I watched Vince Lombardi lead the Green Bay Packers to a 33-14 win over Oakland.in 1968, the same year I submitted my first cartoon to The Spartanburg Herald Journal newspaper. I had drawn Coach Lombardi talking to players on the sidelines, but instead of words, it was all symbols and stuff like they used to use in the comics to denote cursing. Up under it was the caption, Vince Lombardi Sweet Talks The Players into Winning. Pretty good for an eleven-year old, I think.
