From The GRITZ Vaults: Life as a Roadie with Red Dog Campbell and Moon Mullins

I am happy to say that GRITZ is now into our eleventh year online, and over the course of the years we have managed to accumulate a vast data base of in depth interviews from all of the biggest names in Southern Rock and more. WIth our new “From The Vaults” series, we will be looking back at some of these classic conversations, as well as providing updates on what the bands and musicians are up to today.

For our first flash back, I decided to spotlight the men behind the men. The guys that kept the show going. The all important road crew.

Back in 1999, I visited Arthur “Moon” Mullins at his Moonlite Motorcycle Shop in Roebuck, SC. We had a great conversation about his many years as Production and Stage Manager for The Marshall Tucker Band, specifically his work with Toy Caldwell, and making sure everything came off perfect night after night.

“I was the Production Manager, Stage Manager - there are a lot of different names for it. I was with the band through 1984. But the job just rolled along. It expanded as the band got bigger and the crews got bigger. Somebody had to take charge and do all that advance work along with the other. At the time, Puff and Blackie, neither one wanted the job so it just kind of fell in my hands quite by accident. After the Tucker Band it all helped because when you drop back into the club level, it’s good to be able to mix sound or call lights. It all became handy after that. Like I said before, Toy was never hung up on where he played and I was out with him after the Tucker Band for about a year and a half or two years.”

Moon told me that Toy was always making him laugh.

“Toy was an absolute clown, with lots of two or three line jokes. So funny. But he was such a poet. Many nights I saw him write notes on toilet paper, Gideon Bibles, anywhere he could just to have something to work off of the next day. His jokes were kind of the same way, you had to kind of just be there. Toy would give you anything. He took care of everybody. He took care of his family and he wanted to share all his wealth and all his fun with everyone.”

Speaking of roadies, there is none more legendary than The Allman Brothers Band’s own Red Dog Campbell. Red Dog headed up the crew for the Brothers for 33 years, and was almost as popular as the band members themselves. After all, Cameron Crowe modeled a character in his Almost Famous film after him, even using his name.

I spoke with Red Dog in August, 200, just as his biography was being released, and right after the firing of Dickey Betts. I asked him about his actual duties onstage.

“Well, in the early days you did it all. Matter of fact, when I started, nobody actually took care of drums. In those days they didn’t really have a drum roadie- or technician- whatever they want to call ‘em these days. Everybody has got to have a title. That’s why in the book it says “roadie” by my name. I was a roadie thirty years ago and I’m a roadie today. It hasn’t changed none. In the old days, we used to have to do it all, drive and everything. I’d set up the drums, and if Kim still needed some help with the amp line, I’d just jump over and start setting up the amp line with him. Or I’d help Callahan with the P.A., you know. And vice-versa. if one of them finished before I did, they’d jump right in and help me. In those days, you didn’t have to say ‘Hey, can you help me?’ There was somebody right there. But nowadays everything is what I guess they call specialization. Everybody has there job. I just take care of the two drummers and the percussionist.”

Today, both Moon Mullins and Red Dog Campbell are retired from the road, but they both have a lifetime of great stories. I’m just happy I was able to hear a few of them first hand.
