So it’s Oklahoma that gets the chance to represent the Big 12 South in Kansas City, and they will probably get a shot at the National title with a victory. Of course, the selection of the Sooners over Texas and Texas Tech in the South Division’s three-way tie has set off national media griping about the BCS. Many argue that the Longhorns beat Oklahoma head-to-head, but they fail to remember that the Red Raiders defeated Texas on the field. Consequently, the head-to-head argument is flawed for those saying it should be Texas in the Big 12 Championship game. As recognized by Commissioner Dan Beebe, the Big 12 tiebreaker rule is the problem- not the BCS. The national media tried to use the Big 12 situation and whine on and on about “the system”. The reality is that hardly any tiebreaker would be fair in the particular case where three teams in the same division of a conference all end up 11-1, having beaten each other once. The head-to-head argument would only apply if the Big 12, like the SEC rule, would have eliminated the bottom team (Texas Tech) via the BCS rankings and then applied the head-to-head rule. Personally, I believe Oklahoma has the stronger résumé after 12 games, but I understand the Texas case as well. You can argue that Oklahoma has a tougher path to the National Title game because they have to go beat Missouri with quarterback Sam Bradford having an injured hand. Texas could see a Mizzou victory lead them to the BCS title game, but I’m sure they would rather have the chance at the Tigers instead of being very interested observers. In the end, the same old lesson applies here- win all of your games and things tend to work out.

The other half of the National title picture has Alabama and Florida battling for the conference crown in the SEC Championship Game. What a scene it will be in the Georgia Dome when the #1 and #2 teams in the AP Poll go at it for the chance to represent the SEC in its third straight National Championship Game. When looking at these two top programs, you have to start with the two coaches who are setting the standard in the SEC-Urban Meyer and Nick Saban. Meyer has taken the league by storm having already won a national title and now having the Gators in position for another in just his fourth season in Gainesville. Saban is seemingly ahead of schedule building back the Alabama tradition in just his second year in Tuscaloosa. The recruiting and coaching impact of Meyer and Saban is being felt in places like Knoxville, Auburn, and Starkville, and it seems like these two will be setting the SEC bar for some time. As for the game itself, both teams have made a habit of getting off to great starts and making their opponents play from behind-another sign of being well-coached. Hopefully this game will live up to its epic buildup and give fans all over the country a true taste of SEC excellence.
