Duke Over Notre Dame: College Sports Are Still The King Down South

Posted: Jun 03, 2008

Since the SEC just wrapped up its meetings down in Destin, Tribal Fever thought it would be a good time to check in.  College sports are the glory of The Footprint, and the rest of the nation is taking notice.

The significance of yesterday's news that Notre Dame's AD just moved laterally to Duke is not lost on us.  Some can claim that Kevin White failed at Notre Dame, but the facts show that Notre Dame is in turmoil.

If Duke's football program turns around under David Cutcliffe, White will be the one smiling.  Notre Dame's prospects remain dim as its increasingly untenable independent football status remains an achilles heel to Notre Dame's future success.

Lou Holtz pointed out to the Irish on his way out the door that you can't have it all.  Being independent and having high academic standards can only lead to boom and bust cycles.

White is better off at Duke, who has already figured out how to balance academics and athletics successfully.

Chalk up another win for the TF Footprint!

In the meantime, we've posted a new feature about the SEC's future.  We believe it is bright, but we've taken a little time to give a gentle warning to the SEC as its sits down and ponders its future.
