Kris Kristofferson
This Old Road
(New West)
One of America’s all time greatest song-writers is back, stripped bare of any ornamental musical enhancements, just the man and his wonderful songs. Producer Don Was has once again woven his musical magic on Kris’ first all new album in eleven years.
The title track alone is worth the price of admission. A tune about growing old. But it only gets better and better. “Pilgrim’s Progress” is all about the questions that come with maturity, and ‘The Last Thing To Go” explores love and heartbreak.
“In The News” speaks of all the tragedy and sadness in the evening news, the Laci Petterson tragedy and the war in Iraq.
“Broken Dreamers, broken rules
Broken-hearted people just like me and you.
We are Children of the Stars
Don’t blame God, I swear to God he’s crying too.”
Amazing.
“Chase the Feeling” is a powerful song about addiction and Kristofferson reminisces about the glory days of his rock-n-roll career in “The Show Goes On”.
Closing the set is “Final Attraction,” a beautiful, heartfelt tribute to lovers and friends, including Janis Joplin, Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings and others.
It sure feels good to have Kris back. Damn good.
