The Mighty Handful is one helluva band. Headed up by former Elvis Presley guitarist Scotty Moore, the band features Billy “I Can Help” Swan on vocals; Bob Moore, also a former Elvis sideman, on bass; the late great Boots Randolph (“Yackety Sax”) on sax; Bucky Barrett, former lead man for Roy Orbison; Buddy Spicher on fiddle, a veteran of many, many gigs including Crystal Gayle; Steve Shepard on keys, who has played with everyone from Carl Perkins to Eric Clapton; Fred Satterfield on drums, Scotty’s drummer of choice and former Oak Ridge Boys drummer. Now, if that ain’t enough talent for you, we have a real problem.
The guys just have a great time in the studio, and it shows, as they rock through “I Got My Mojo Working,” Willie Dixon’s “You Can’t Judge a Book,” B.B. King’s “Rock Me Baby,” along with classics like “Hoochis Coochie Man,” “Let The Good times Roll,” and a brilliant take on Screamin’ Jay Hawkin’s immortal “I Put a Spell On You.”
It’s a lot of good ol’ rockabilly blues and rock and roll, served up by some legendary players. It don’t get no better.
