If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Christine is the lead vocalist with the Saturday Night Live band. The “Beehive Queen” is a hard rocking Memphis soul fueled dynamo, and The Deep End may be her finest album yet.
She brings along some pretty heavy guest artists for the rude, including former Mott The Hoople front man turned Americana icon Ian Hunter who helps out on “There Ain’t No Cure” and Dion DeMucci who adds his unmistakable sound to the soulful “Cry Baby Cry.”
Of course Christine doesn’t need anyone else to shine. The rocking “Bring it with You When You Come” attests to that fact, and the breathtaking “Like Honey” may be my favorite track on the disc. Absolutely beautiful.
The title track here, “The Deep End” is just an amazing, heartfelt love song, with Christine getting some help from Al Anderson, and “What’s The Matter with You Baby” features Marshall Crenshaw and Levon Helm on a great 60’s R&B sounding tune. Another favorite of mine.
There are 15 tracks in all, each one of them special in its own way, and all good. If you like some serious rockin’ Southern Soul, wade on out, or better yet just dive ride into The Deep End. You’ll be glad you did.
