At a time when confidence in our wonderful nation seems to be at an all time low, our buddy Charlie brings out the big guns for a red, white and blue tribute to America. It’s a collection of songs, old and new from a man who is the biggest advocate of the USA since old Uncle Sam himself, Charlie Daniels.
Beginning with one of Charlie’s trademark recitations, “My Beautiful America” followed by a sincere “Pledge of Allegiance.” the stage is set for a rocking patriotic showdown for sure.
The CDB rock “America I Believe in You” and “Let Freedom Ring,” with lyrics like “let the free bird fly and let freedom ring.” What a great song that begins with a thumping Charlie Hayward bass line.
There are 15 powerful track here, including “American Farmer,” an updated take on “What This World Needs is a Few More Rednecks.” and Charlie’s post 9/11 rocker “This Ain’t No Rag It’s a Flag.”
Charlie has been rocking his American pride for a long time now, as evident by classics like “Still in Saigon,” “In America,” “Simple Man.” and another tribute to 9/11, “The Last Fallen Hero.”
Charlie closes the set with a reading of the timeless Red Skelton version pf “The Pledge of Allegiance,” and “The Summer of ‘68,” a simply wonderful song and tribute to the heroes of 1968, from the soldiers in Vietnam to Martin Luther King, all built around a Byrds-like jingle jangle beat.
As I write this review it is September 11th, the ninth anniversary of the attack on America. I have been gazing through cataracts at the TV as the news shows recount that day none of us will ever forget. And even though my eyes are awaiting surgery that will bring my sight back up to par, I could not pass up this opportunity to salute Charlie and the band for a CD that lifted my spirits today like no other could. A collection that should be in every home in America. Land of the free bird and home of the brave.
