Finally! I have been lurking and eagerly awaiting the arrival of a Bekka Bramlett solo album for several years. I have always been in love with the girl’s voice. I guess that goes al the way back to my love of her parents’ music - Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett.
I loved Bekka's work with Fleetwood Mac and Mick Fleetwood's Zoo, and I still listen to the 1997 Bekka and Billy (Burnette) CD quite often. So when I heard about the release of I Got News For You, I was thrilled.
Now I will say right off the bat that I was in no way disappointed. The album is a pure mix of great country, blues and soul, and Bekka rises to the occasion on each track. Bramlett has served as a great backup singer for so many, like Faith Hill, but I have always maintained that she belongs downstage front and center. Just listen to this new record and tell me if you disagree.
The album was produced by one of Nashville’s great artist/songwriters, Joe Stampley, who turned out a magnificent record. From the bouncy opener “What’s On My Mind” all the way through to the beautiful “Sweet Love.”
Bekka’s voice is at once breathtaking, sensual, powerful, and passionate. Once in a while there is a little of that Janis Joplin/Bonnie Bramlett bluesy gravel, as on the amazing title track/single “I Got News for You.” This song is best played loud. It rocks baby.
“I Wanna Be That Woman” is an emotional, tender love song that will be perfect for country radio. And her violin and pedal steel enhanced cover of the classic “Misty Blue” just puts me into some sort of a trance. Another instant country classic.
“The Truck Stops Here” is a hoot of a tune from the point of view of a truck driver’s lady. “Let’s make one thing clear/When you’re done with your run the truck stops here.” Preach it sister.
“You’ll Never Lose My Love” is another emotional, tender and just plain beautiful song. The fact of the matter is that there is not a bad song in the collection. Ten great songs, all delivered by one of the most powerful and passionate voices in Nashville. Heck, in he world for that matter.
I got news for you. Bekka Bramlett is here. All the other country girls may as well step aside and let her through. The top of the charts is her destiny,
