Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Well, I haven’t seen the movie yet but after listening to the soundtrack a few times, I can hardly wait to see Crazy Heart. The actors in this movie do some fine singing. Not only Jeff Bridges, who falls somewhere between Kristofferson, Jennings and Haggard, but also Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall.
Bridges is great on songs like “Brand New Angel” and “Somebody Else,” and Robert Duvall’s acapella rendition of Billy Joe Shaver’s “Live Forever” is priceless. And Colin Farrell sounds down right radio worthy on “Gone, Gone, Gone,” not to mention his fantastic duet with Bridges, “Fallin & Flyin.” They may be actors but these guys ain't playin.'
Besides the movie stars, there are some awesome classic country tunes here, including vintage Buck Owens, Louvin Brothers and Townes Van Zandt. Sam Phillips’ “Reflecting Light” is equally pleasing, and the Lightnin’ Hopkins blues number is a nice touch. And then there is Ol’ Waylon, one of my personal heroes, and his classic “Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way?’
“The Weary Kind,” the theme from Crazy Heart, sung by Ryan Bigham, co-written by Crazy Heart soundtrack co-producer (along with the late great Stephen Bruton) T-Bone Burnett is already a hit, and has been nominated for an Academy Award.
I predict great sales and numerous awards for this album, and from what I hear, the movie as well. But until the film hits town, I will keep the Crazy Heart soundtrack in my changer. It’s everything good about country music. No Nashville Pop. Just real, honest country music.
