Winters Brothers Summer Jam Was a Blast

It was a perfect weekend for a festival. Just ask anyone who attended Bonaroo, and if they can remember the weekend, they will agree. As for those of us who have been making the trek to Nashville yearly for many moons to attend The Winters Brothers Southern Summer Jam, we were all ecstatic that God had blessed us with near perfect weather.

Scott Greene and I left Greenville on Friday for the 6-hour ride. Slightly overcast skies coupled with a large amount of traffic jams made for an unusually drawn out trip to Music City, but all’s well that ends well, as we, along with many other friends of The Winters Brothers were invited out to Dennis Winters’ home in Nolensville for a spaghetti dinner on Friday night. All of the usual friends were there, John and Tracy, Jim from St. Louis, Southern George and Cici from Vienna, Austria, Patti, all of the Winters family, Dennis and Linda and their daughters, Casey, Cody and Carly, Uncle Zak Tucker and Mrs. Tucker and many others. The food was great and the conversation even better. A great time was had by all.

On Saturday, June 16, we left the hotel to drive back out to the farm. I had made plans the day before to interview Uncle Zak Tucker, a jam legend, and brother in law of the late Papa Don Winters. Our friends Dave and Peggy Peck came over and Dave videotaped the interview. We discussed Zak’s early days playing music in Miami, Florida, and backing up folks like Lefty Frizell and Hank Snow. The jam got underway under sunny skies at about 5 PM, beginning with a songwriters in the round featuring Rex Norton, Dan Abraham, Mean Mary and Wheatie. The band Shotgun Blue rocked out on several cover tunes, and Uncle Zack Tucker treated everyone to a great country set backed by his son Randy, along with his nephew Donnie Winters.

At one point, Dennis brought his grandson out onto the stage and sang a beautiful acapella gospel song he recently wrote. He had sang it for us at the Friday dinner as well, and it was amazing.

Tommy Crain and The Crosstown Allstars blew the roof off of the barn, beginning with the Allman Brothers’ “Jessica,” and playing a great set of originals that included “Find Another Lover” from their debut album. Tommy on guitar, Bob Rumer on guitar, Towson Engsberg on drums and Kerry Creasy on bass burned up the stage with electric blues, Southern rock, and some serious dynamic enhanced jamming. Tommy called me up to sing on “Long Haired Country Boy,” which was great fun.

Next up was an acoustic set from yours truly. I was accompanied by Donnie Winters on lead guitar, and we were joined by Tommy Crain for a couple of songs. We closed out with “Will The Circle Be Unbroken,” bringing out Dennis Winters, Eddie Stone (on B-3) and The Southern Belles to take it on home.

The kings of the party, The Winters Brothers Band was next. Tonight they had two additional members sitting in for the whole set. Eddie Stone from Doc Holiday on keyboards and Mike Causey from Stillwater on guitar really added layers to the sound. Like Scott said to me, “Man, they sounded like The Allman Brothers Band!” Performing favorites like “Sang Her Love Songs” and “Seven Bridges Road,” the band stood and delivered in every way, and Casey, Cody and Carly, The Southern Belles sang and danced their hearts out during the whole show in matching outfits.

At the tail end of the show, Dennis announced the jam, and brought members of Tommy Crain’s band and others onto the stage for an hour of smoking jams, including “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Fooled Around and Fell in Love,” “Roadhouse Blues” (featuring Casey Winters on vocal) and “Can’t You See,” among others. The band never sounded better.

I know I say this every year, but it still holds true. The jam was just over way too fast, even in its extended, hour longer, format. It was hard saying goodbye to all of my friends for another year, but we all left with a head full of music and some great memories of another outstanding Southern Jam.
