Widespread Panic Fall Tour Underway with New Member Jimmy Herring

Posted: Oct 05, 2007

Jimmy Herring may be the king of all "hired guns" in Southern rock.

He jumped in and filled the Dickey Betts vacancy in The Allman Brothers Band. He took over Jerry Garcia's role in The Grateful Dead. He even played in all-star bands like The Other Ones and Phil Lesh & Friends, not to mention his history with Col. Bruce Hampton's Aquarium Rescue Unit.

Although Jimmy has never stayed long in one gig, it appears he is now ready to "settle down," as the newest member of Widespread Panic. Sadly founding member and lead guitarist Michael Houser died of pancreatic cancer in 2002. His replacement, guitarist George McConnell, left the band last year.

Now into their 21st year, Widespread has consistantly ranked among the Top 50 grossing touring bands over the past eight years.

I've seen Herring play with the Brothers, The Dead, jam with Gov't Mule and improvise with Project Z. It's be interesting to see how the guitar master fits into the Panic.

The fall tour with Herring in the hot seat kicked off September 21 in Memphis, and runs through November 10 in Birmingham.
