Wes Freed Talks About Artwork for The Drive By Truckers’ The Big To-Do

Last week I interviewed Virginia artist Wes Freed. Freed’s indelible art has graced the album covers for the last seven Drive By Truckers’ releases. Freed also creates the Truckers’ tour posters as well as his own art. The Truckers’ newest CD--The Big To-Do—will be released on March 16, and contains Freed’s latest work.

Our interview proved quite extensive, and I’m still working on it, but here’s an excerpt from the interview where Freed explains the process he and the Truckers collaborated on for The Big To-Do: “It’s different with every record except that I always get rough mixes as the recording is coming along so I can hear individual songs for individual illustrations to get an overview for what the record is going to be like. For The Big To-Do the idea for the name and everything has to do with the whole circus thing. We knew that going into it. That proved to be a pretty rich thing to draw from. I could go back and do the whole thing over again with different circus images and still have more stuff because there’s so much to work with there…”
