The Soul And Songs of Dennis Linde
12/19/08
Born in Abilene, Texas in 1943, Dennis Linde ranks as one of the most insightful songwriters of his time. A luminary in Nashville, Linde wrote many hits including Elvis Presley’s “Burning Love”. Artists such as Roger Miller, Roy Drusky, The Dixie Chicks, Tonya Tucker, The Oak Ridge Boys, Blue Oyster Cult, Robert Palmer, Brenda Lee, Sawyer Brown, Arthur Alexander, the Fifth Dimension, Gary Morris, Don Williams, The Judds, Alan Jackson and Garth Brooks have all recorded Linde’s soulful songs.
The low-key Linde could play various instruments, but songwriting was his grace. Linde remained a man of few words but from his catchy, emotive songs he wrote left very little for him to say. Linde let the music do the talking.
Linde’s sad passing in 2006 did not extinguish his music. Linde’s songs are still being recorded by country artists like Alan Jackson, Sammy Kershaw and The Dixie Chicks, earning these artists hit records. A Linde champion, Bruce Burch—the University of Georgia’s Music Director at the Terry Business College—will be coordinating a tribute to Linde early next year.
This organized event exists for the benefit of Coalition of Pulmonary Fibrosis, the vicious disease that claimed Linde’s life. “A Night of Burnin’ Love” will educate people on this disease, and a portion of ticket prices will be tax deductible. Linde’s daughter Lisa and her husband, the Hollywood actor, James Marsden, will host the event.
Linde’s fictional song characters appear through his songs and immortalized such as the infamous “Earl” from songs such as “Queen of My Double-Wide” and “Goodbye Earl”. Linde’s songs continue to resonate with tragic issues like domestic violence running as dark themes under his colorful lyrics.
