Several weeks ago, I attended Patterson Hood's Annual Guitar Pull. Proceeds from this evening of Athens songwriters sharing one stage went to benefit Athens, Georgia's, Robert Osborne Film Festival. This counts as the festival's sixth year of showing Hollywood classics. This year the films include: To Catch a Thief, Double Indemnity, Stand By Me, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Shining, Steamboat Bill Jr.,All About Eve, The Godfather II and The Wizard of Oz.
The festival begins today. At the guitar pull that night, I interviewed the director Pamela Kohn. I asked her to define the cinematic experience for film fans at this festival: "We're very fortunate that we have a good relationship with the film studios. For this film festival we only use the best re-digitized prints or 35mm archival prints. It's the best quality in existence. They're not in circulation really. These are extremely pristine prints. Flawless. We're showing the only Steamboat Bill Jr. print available in America..."
The festival also includes some heavy guests. The Classic Center in downtown Athens hosts this three-day festival. The Classic Center transforms into a movie palace with a state-of-the-art projection system, sound system and a 50-foot screen. Action!
