The GRITZ Mail Bag: June 5, 2009

Posted: Jun 05, 2009

Hi Buff,
Man those photo's were awesome. (Southern Rock Scrapbook) Thanks for posting them on the website. Some I've seen before but most were new to me...

Geez they looked like good times .Must have been great been around all that wonderful music in the 70's. Unfortunately I was still only 11 in 1977 so it all passed me by at the time. Fortunately we have that wonderful music to remind us all....

...maybe one day I'll get to the USA and visit Spartanburg, Macon, Jacksonville and those other 'Southern Rock places'

Great site, great nostalgia...keep it coming!!!

Vince In Cape Town, South Africa

Hey Vince. Thanks man! I am so happy you are enjoying the pictures and articles. Hey, when you do come up, let me know. Maybe I can give you a guided tour! Thanks again! Buff

Dear Michael,
Here some pictures from the Netherlands
The two Skynyrd pics are from Friday 06-27-2003 on the Arrow Classic Rock Festival, Lichtenvoorde the Netherlands. (Skynyrd's Vicious Cycle tour)
Thanks for all the great pics and info on the Swampland/Gritz internet page.
 Mark van Mil, Holland

Hey Mark. Thanks for thinking of us! If you are ever by Pop Eye Records in Hengelo, tell my brother Johnny Southbound I said “Howdy.” He and I were Southern Rock pen pals many moons before there was e-mail and internet! Best! Buff

Thanks for all you do for Southern Rock music.  I'm always surprised to find my name mentioned among your writings.

Thank you,  Paul Hornsby

Paul, you are too humble. In my book, you are one of the primary players of the whole Southern Rock era! Thanks buddy. -Buff

I just stumbled across this interview with Derek Hess and I am so happy he's still playing.

I grew up with his children, Jenifer and Dylan. My younger brother and I lived 3 houses down from them and played together often. I have many, many great memories from that time.

I know I'm passed the deadline for winning a Mainstream South cd, but can you tell me where to purchase one? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx, Kathy Houk

Thank you Kathy! Derek is a heck of a drummer and a heck of a guy. The CD can be purchased online at cdbaby.com. Just do a search once there for Mainstream South. It’s a good one! - Buff

Hi Michael
Intrigued to read of the new Barry Lee cd!
I have always felt, and often return to, the Barry Lee songs on the RCB albums as they are interesting musically and spiritually – and can even be humorous! (“I May Wound You!!”)

Barry’s contributions to Skynyrd were also top notch (check that solo on “Honky Tonk Night Time Man” – HOT!)

I wonder what happened to Barry’s  “Timepiece” album – I have a cassette of it somewhere….

I am also wondering where the new “Cowboy” album is – any clues??

I’m still mixing my album…. slowly… but getting there…

All the best
Craig Eason

Hey Craig! Looking forward to your project. Man, you and I have been “e-mail pals for over ten years now! Can you believe it? Barry Lee is amazing. His Mainstream South project with Derek Hess and Steve Perez is killer, and I eagerly await his gospel rock band Chariot’s CD!  Take care buddy! Buff
