Last week I received Texas-born Waylon Jennings’ first 6 albums—Folk Country, Waylon Sings Ol’ Harlon, Love of the Common People, Hangin’ On, Waylon and Singer of Sad Songs. These recording span from 1965-1970. Years before, Jennings gave up his seat to his bandleader Buddy Holly that ended in a fatal crash. After a stint in Los Angeles, Jennings moved to Nashville and recorded for RCA Records, which these first 6 albums comprise.
There’s no doubt Waylon Jennings commanded respect long before the industry knew his name. These albums capture Jennings’ early musical pursuits, but they also serve as the seeds for his later outlaw days. I look forward to writing about Jennings’ music when he was playing by Nashville’s stranglehold codes. Pull any Jennings you have off the shelf and give it a spin tonight...
