Stephen Bruton Dead at 60

Stephen Bruton, the super talented songwriter, musician and actor died on Saturday in Los Angeles at the age of 60. Among his many accomplishments, Bruton was a member of Kris Kristofferson's touring band for over twenty years. He had been fighting throat cancer for two years.

Bruton wrote or co-wrote hundreds of great songs, and had his material covered by many of the very best, including Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett. and Bonnie Raitt, among others. He also produced albums for Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Chris Smither, Marcia Ball and many more, and released five acclaimed solo albums. He was also an in demand session musician who performed on works by Raitt, Delbert McClinton, Elvis Costello, and others.

Bruton grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, making music with friend T-Bone Burnett, who would later become the talented musician and much sought-after producer we all know and love. He began working with Kristofferson’s band after moving to Woodstock, N.Y., in 1970. As an actor, Steve appeared in numerous films, including A Star Is Born, Songwriter, and Heaven's Gate. Stephen’s final recorded work will appear on Kristofferson’s upcoming new album.
