Sometimes I Favor Good Gospel Music
Posted: Mar 09, 2007I just love music. I always have. All types of music, from good Southern rock to Outlaw Country, rhythm and blues to sweet soul, I love it all. But out of all the music in my library, there is perhaps none more closer to my heart than gospel music.
Now, I’m not talking about Contemporary Christian music, which I also enjoy, a passion that began with Amy Grant back in 1980, Nor am I talking about good ol’ Southern gospel, groups like The Happy Goodman Family and The Rambos, more music that I enjoy from time to time. No, I am speaking of black gospel, performed by singers like Aretha Franklin, Shirley Ceasar, and groups like The Five Blind Boys of Alabama, and singers like Andre Crouch.
A couple of years ago, a friend of mine introduced me to a young lady who works for the Greenville School System during the week, and sings her heart out on the weekends at church. Sophia Jackson is blessed with a powerful and beautiful voice, and she uses it to praise the Lord. Not so long ago, she formed an all female gospel group called Favor.
Joining Sophia in Favor are: Linda F. Sullivan (Vocalist); Kanethia Rankin (Vocalist); Amy McCullough (Musician/Vocalist); Brandi Wilson (Vocalist) and Jacqueline Burton (Drummer/Vocalist), all first cousins.
This week, Favor releases their debut CD, Yes, God is Real, an amazing album filled with up beat music with major contributions from Robert Gullette and a couple of excellent vocals from their Aunt, Willie R. Wilson.
Favor have a major amount of talent, and even more spirit and heart. These girls have rocked my world with their debut CD, and seeing them perform live is a sheer joy. My prediction is that they are destined for the bigger stage – the world stage if you will. I really hope so. They are the real deal. One listen and you will know it too. You’ll feel it in your soul. Deep down in your very soul.
