Philip Walden JR. RIP

"But I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no
Not gonna let 'em catch the midnight rider..."
                                                    "Midnight Rider"
                                                    The Allman Brothers Band

This is a difficult dispatch to write. Last night, Philip Walden Jr. was killed in a car accident. Philip Jr., 48, worked in Atlanta as an attorney. He is the son of the late Capricorn Records president Phil Walden.

Philip Jr. and I spoke various times over the last several weeks to coordinate a Swampland interview. We crossed paths in Athens, Georgia, many years ago. Last week we agreed we would interview today at 2 o'clock. Yesterday I sent him an email asking if we were still on for today, and he responded around 5PM, 'Yep'. Four hours later he was gone.

So, now instead of asking all these questions about the Walden family, and the work Philip conducted over the years with Capricorn Records, Widespread Panic, Velocette Records, Turner Broadcasting, the University of Georgia and a long list of other questions...I have to write this obituary. Hearing the news of his death an hour and a half before our interview time is unsettling and sad.

On behalf of Swampland and music fans everywhere, I'd like to express my deepest condolences to the Walden family, their friends, associates and loved ones. There is no doubt Philip Jr., and the rest of the Walden Family are heroes of the highest order. Catch you on the other side Philip...Sorry I was a day behind...God bless ya man.

The flag flies at half mast...

James Calemine
