The great blues pianist Joseph Willie “Pinetop” Perkins died today of a cardiac arrest at 97 years old in Austin, Texas. Born in Belzoni, Mississippi, Perkins played with many of America’s blues greats such as Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.
Perkins recorded a hit at Sam Phillips’ legendary Memphis studio in 1953 called “Pinetop’s Boogie Woogie”. Perkins recorded 18 solo albums as well as many guest appearances on various other recordings.
In 2008, Perkins won a Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album. Perkins also appeared in the classic comedy, The Blues Brothers, arguing with John Lee Hooker outside of Aretha’s Soul Food Café.
