Marc Ford Talks About Joining Booker T. Jones' Band

Posted: May 26, 2009

In our interview last week Marc Ford and I discussed him producing Ryan Bingham's new record. My review on Bingham's new CD, Roadhouse Sun, will be up this week. Meanwhile, here's the part of our interview where Marc talks about joining the great Booker T. Jones' band.

JC: Tell me what you can about this very recent development of you joining Booker T’s band.

MF: It’s a real honor. I had a deal with my wife that I wouldn’t go back on the road. I turned him down at first—because I had a band . I was like, ‘I wish Booker would join my band!’

JC: He played on your Burning Tree record back in 1990…

MF: Yeah, he remembered that. One of the guitar players' schedule was not going to work so his manager called back and said before they looked for somebody else they wanted to see if I changed my mind. There’s not a lot of money around for anybody these days and I see it as a job—an opportunity.

JC: It will be cool, you’ll get to play some Steve Cropper riffs…

MF: Oh yeah, I play Cropper riffs all the time. There are European dates, the Fuji festival in Japan, a bunch of Canadian dates too. We do a gig in San Francisco on June 4. I’m going to go up on the 3rd—there’s no rehearsals, but Booker invited me to his house to hang out on the 3rd, so we can go over stuff and play on the 4th. Then a week after that we go to the East Coast.

JC: Coming south?

MF: Not sure yet. The dates go up to August and then it slips over into next year. That’s what they have booked. I’m going to go as long as it works.

JC: That’s good. Who else is in the band?

MF: I don’t know their names. There’s this kid from San Francisco drumming Booker really likes who plays like Al Jackson Jr. Rick Holstrum is the other guitar player. The bass player is from the Thunderbirds. It’s a killer band. It should be a lot of fun...

More Ford, Booker and Bingham news later this week. Until then,
