John Mellencamp's No Better Than This

John Mellencamp’s No Better Than This

Recorded by T-Bone Burnett, No Better Than This counts as John Mellencamp’s 25th album. These songs were recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis, a Dallas hotel room where Robert Johnson recorded and the First African Baptist Church in Savannah. Burnett’s plays guitar on these songs as well as Tom Waits’ longtime guitarist Mark Ribot.

No Better Than This—an American folk inspired collection-- was recorded in mono, with only one microphone. This is the first mono-only release to make the Top 10 since James Brown’s Pure Dynamite! Live At the Royal in 1964. Mellencamp recently told Rolling Stone regarding his country-blues shows: “If you’re coming to hear the greatest hits, don’t even come.”
