Howlin' Wolf's guitarist Hubert Sumlin died on December 4, 2011, at 80. Keith Richards released this statement regarding Sumlin:
"With sorrow I received the news of Hubert's passing. He put up a long hard fight. To me he was and uncle and a teacher, and all the guitar players must feel the same as myself."
Mick Jagger said this about the Sumlin: "Hubert was an incisive yet delicate blues player. He had a really distinctive and original tone, and was a wonderful foil for Howlin Wolf's growling vocal style.
"On a song like 'Goin' Down Slow' he could produce heart rending emotion, and on a piece like 'Wang Dang Doodle', an almost playful femininity. He was an inspiration to us all."
Born in Greenwood, Mississippi, Sumlin began playing guitar at age 6. In 1954, Sumlin started playing guitar in Howlin Wolf's band. Sumlin also played a short while with Muddy Waters. Keith Richards, Levon Helm, Eric Clapton and James Cotton recorded on Sumlin's 2006 solo album About Them Shoes. Another American blues legend has passed...
