Delaney Bramlett is easily one of the most influencial southern musicians ever. Born in Mississippi into a life of hard scrabble sharecropping, Bramlett followed his musical dreams to Memphis and then Los Angeles. In Memphis, he wrote and recorded with members of Stax. In Los Angeles, he anchored a young rock scene built around cats like James Burton and Leon Russell.
By the time all the rock and roll glitter had invaded SoCal, Bramlett had already moved on from that increasingly egotistical and vapid scene. Hooking up with former Ikette and now his wife, Bonnie Bramlett, the Mr and Mrs cobbled together their cohorts to create Delaney & Bonnie & Friends.
Although they recorded a critically important record for Stax (this recent reissue shows the full scope after adding back tracks that Bramlett had written himself that had been taken off because Stax didn't hold the publishing), most consider Accept No Substitute as the group's first album.
Accept No Substitute's influence cannot be overstated. Bramlett and crew were playing roots rock before anyone knew what it was. However, everyone from the Beatles to the Rolling Stones to Eric Clapton to Jimi Hendrix were blown away. Almost every one of them ended up playing or sitting in with D&B.
