GRITZ Movie Reviews, "Invasion" Bores, "Stardust" Rules

Posted: Aug 20, 2007

Hollywood is really pushing the boundaries of how many times a good movie idea can be recycled. First there was the 1956 original Invasion of the Body Snatchers, followed by two more versions, including a 1978 remake staring Donald Sutherland and a 1993 film with Meg Tilly and Gabrielle Anwar. Now, in the grand tradition of King Kong,  we are handed yet a fourth remake, staring Oscar winner Nicole Kidman and the new 007 Daniel Craig.

The new version is by far the worst of the four, finding Nicole Kidman fighting to stay awake, much like the film’s audience.

There are a couple of semi-scary moments, but for the most part, Invasion is about as thrilling as watching paint peel. I guess two A-List actors cannot save a doomed script.

One Star

BABE WATCH- Even the pretty little smile of Kieth Urban's main squeeze couldn't save this box office disaster.

BABE WATCH- Claire Danes is the prettiest star.

One of the finest fairytales ever to be seen, Stardust tells the story of a boy who falls in love with a girl that is clearly out of his league. They see a falling star, and she agrees that if he brings the star back to her, she will marry him.

Evil witches (Michelle Phiffer is excellent as the lead witch), cloud pirates (Robert DeNiro) and a star in human form (Claire Danes) help to create a movie that is part Wizard of Oz, part Chronicles of Narnia, part Harry Potter with a little Star Wars thrown in. Lots of great actors including a cameo from the master, Peter O’Toole.

An ideal fantasy, and one of the best films of the summer. One of the best fairytales ever.

Five Stars

BABE WATCH- I knew she was a witch when she put her hand on my leg and I turned into a motel! Michelle is a babe, at least until she starts to decompose.

Rush Hour 3

Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker return in the third, and hopefully final, installment of the action/comedy buddy film, Rush Hour. It’s more of the same Asian and black jokes, silly one liners and over the top kung fu fighting. What a waste of good film.
