Gates Nichols of Confederate Railroad Diagnosed with Cancer

We are saddened to learn that one of our Angelus friends Gates Nichols, pedal steel player of Confederate Railroad, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

A mutual friend Julia LaRue wrote the following thoughts on Gates. We'll keep you in our prayers buddy. -Buffalo

My husband and I met Gates on the first Confederate Railroad Cruise in November 2002.   We were seated at his table along with Dave and Sandra Fullerton. Gates was very soft spoken. We certainly did not expect him to bless our food and our next day’s activities each night at our table.    We were amazed to learn that he and Beverly were getting married the day after our cruise ended. We all exchanged addresses and phone numbers before the cruise ended and promised to stay in touch.

None of us realized how much these friendships made that trip would mean to all of us. Gates and Beverly lived closer to us and we started sending emails to each other. Then, they invited us to attend church with them. Several months later, we did and became active in their church. Gates played with the praise band when his schedule allowed.

When Confederate Railroad played close to our home, we would sometimes meet Beverly and we would ride together to their show.   Before Gates retirement in December 2008, we had attended Confederate Railroad concerts in 4 states. Gates was always smiling and enjoyed what he was doing – playing music. He has been to several Angelus events.   The more we got to know him, the more we were amazed at the long musical career he has enjoyed. We had no idea that his first #1 record was with Henry Gross – “Shannon.”   With Confederate Railroad, he was part of the band for Johnny Paycheck and David Allen Coe.   He has played at numerous jam sessions in the Atlanta area in the last few years as well as at “Miss Kitty’s”.

Since retirement, he has enjoying playing in the praise band at our church in Hiram, Georgia. He has also played keyboards on a local band – The Major Dogs.

Currently, he is fighting cancer that has just been diagnosed this past week.
He is still thanking all the hospital staff that check on him, with a confidence that only his faith in God could give him.
