A Conversation with Jayhawk Gary Louris En Route To Atlanta

After I finished interviewing Mark Olson, he passed the phone over to his songwriting partner Gary Louris for our interview. They were rolling down the road to Atlanta for shows this weekend and this excerpt from our conversation reveals insight into Olson and Louris' new CD Ready For the Flood.

James Calemine: Congratulations on Ready For the Flood--it sounds great. I have to say your Vagabonds CD was remarkable too.

Gary Louris: Thanks James...

JC: Let's talk about which southern musicians influenced your music.

GL: One southern guy I like alot is Joe South--he's from Atlanta. I'd love to meet him. Mark and I would love to meet Joe South. He was a great producer, great songwriter, cool guitar player. He played guitar on "Sounds of Silence". He was the guy that overdubbed the guitar. He was a great all round guy. He's definitely an influence. That early Elvis stuff too. All that STAX music and stuff from Memphis. The old country stuff from the south. Tony Joe White was a guy I really liked--his swampy guitar sound.

JC: Did y'all listen to a lot of Louvin Brothers?

MO: Oh yeah. I had the boxset. I can't remember where they are from...

JC: Alabama. I interviewed Charlie Louvin a while back.

GL: That was the interview Charlie said he still stands to the side of the microphone because he still thinks Ira is going to step up to the microphone.

JC: Speaking of southern artists, Chris Robinson produced Ready For the Flood and your solo CD Vagabonds. You obviously trust his judgement. Did y'all take the same approach on both albums?

GL: Well, this chemistry was different because we had different players--different engineer and we didn't want to replicate anything. There are differences with me and Mark--it's easier. it was a little more of a stripped down affair with this record. For my record there was a little more time spent with a little bigger budget. We recorded it at the same place as Vagabonds--Sage & Sound Studios in Los Angeles.

JC: Mark said it only took you guys a couple of weeks to record Ready For the Flood.

GL: I think he might be right. I think we did the whole thing in eight days.

JC: Are all of the songs on Ready For the Flood relatively new?

GL: They're all new, relatively, except "Turn Your Pretty Name Around", "Trap's Been Set", "My Gospel Song For You" and "Bloody Hands" were all songs that were resurrected, not because a shortage of material, it's just that they were still great songs that we felt fit in. Now, with the American release, they tacked on "Precious Time" and "Cut Dress", which pushed it to a six song older tune additions. If you listen to the record on headphones it's particularly striking. You're in the room then.

JC: With Chris recording the new Crowes album in the next couple of weeks will he be able to appear on any of your shows?

GL: No, we talked in New York. That's when it would have happened. He was just in the process of moving upstate that day and he couldn't come to our show in New York. I don't think we'll see him on this trip.

JC: One last question. I know you'll get this a lot, but do you think the Jayhawks will ever reunite? I know y'all have a gig in May.

GL: I think at the end of May we have one in Spain. I think we'll do it as an occasional kind of thing because it's fun and people are interested, but to make it an ongoing business of day to day rehearsals, tours, rehearsal spaces--it opens up a whole new can of worms. I highly doubt that will be a day to day functioning band. It doesn't mean we aren't going to be out there playing.
