Bobby Charles Dead at 71
Louisiana songwriter Bobby Charles collapsed and died in his Abbeville home yesterday. He was 71. Charles wrote songs for Bill Haley and Fats Domino while musicians such as Ray Charles, Etta James, Kris Kristofferson and Gatemouth Brown covered his tunes. Some of his hits included "Walkin’ To New Orleans”, “I Don’t Know Why I Love You (But I Do)" and “See You Later Alligator”.
Charles remained reclusive throughout his career. His last big outing was for The Band’s Last Waltz show in 1976. However, in 2007 he performed at The New Orleans Jazz Festival. Charles also collaborated with Neil Young in the 70s.
Charles recently recorded a new album--co-produced by Dr. John—that’s set for release next month. For many artists, death is a great career move and this new record will bring admirers out of the woodwork. The Flag Flies At Half Mast…
