An Interview From The Road: Grayson Capps Talks About A Love Song For Bobby Long

Posted: Sep 14, 2011

An Excerpt From Interview with Grayson Capps

I just got off the phone with Alabama singer/songwriter/guitarist Grayson Capps. He was calling from the road. He's preparing for an upcoming tour that begins tomorrow behind his latest new album The Lost Cause Minstrels.

In our interview we discussed his Alabama Baptist upbringing, his drama studies at Tulane University, Sam Shepard, various writers, his musical career, his latest album, his tour, Levon Helm and a few other interesting topics. While I transcribe the interview, here's an excerpt from our conversation today.

I asked Grayson about his father Ronald Everett Capps' book Off Magazine Street that filmmaker Shainee Gable adapted to a film called A Love Song For Bobby Long. The film starred Scarlett Johansson and John Travolta. The movie was shot in Louisiana during 2004. Grayson wrote the title track as well as various other songs for the movie soundtrack.

"Yeah, the book was unpublished at the time. It was at the bottom of my filing cabinet. She wanted to do a movie that took place in New Orleans. I let her read it and she fell in love with the story. She wrote the screenplay around the book, my life and the songs I'd already written.

"I wrote one specifically for the movie called "Lorraine's Song" that Theresa Anderson sang. She named the movie after a song I wrote for Bobby many years before the actuality came about. She puts the whole puzzle together with that movie."

Stay tuned for the full-length Grayson Capps interview soon. Meanwhile, here are his upcoming tour dates.
