Dispatch From The Front Lines...Winds of Change...Holiday Greetings From Swampland...

Posted: Dec 15, 2006

12/15/06

The mission statement expresses our intention while these "Dispatches" will give you a glimpse behind the scenes...current & upcoming events...as well as observations, and random thoughts. We're really just getting started here at Swampland. For every three articles you can read on the site, fifteen are being prepared for viewing by Matt, our website guru. We've covered a lot of ground in the last ten days and we're gaining momentum every day.
Soon we'll be linking up to all sorts of vital and interesting sites--as well as constantly adding our own prodigious backlog of material to assure the Swampland viewers--with addictions to buy, view, visit, listen, and absorb all things southern--an easy trip. It could be worse, right? Swampland's sports section will rival many major online athletic outlets by next season...Pete Weber, Chris, and Patrick all deserve a nod and a wink as the playoff fever descends...
Jim Markel, the Swampland Spearhead, prefers to remain in the shadows, but we all must acknowledge his fearless action to make Swampland a reality. We've been talking about this entity for years. I'll serve as the narrator on this slow journey to the heart of Swampland's most unseen and unheard hinterlands. In the very near future I'll interview two great southern writers--Paul Hemphill and Thomas Brothers. Hemphill wrote Lovesick Blues: The Life and Times of Hank Williams, The Nashville Sound, The Good Old Boys, Wheels, Long Gone, The Sixkiller Chronicles, and many others. Thomas Brothers' new book, Louis Armstrong's New Orleans, ranks as one of the most insightful books penned about the Crescent City. I'll also sneak a few gifts under the tree while you're not looking. So, we're all busy as bees in a tar bucket. Many new features linger on the horizon such as the Soul Food Tour, more film & photography features, and various arcane Swampland specialties. Change is afoot...
I'm sure you've heard Swampland merged with Gritz magazine. Gritz's main man, Michael "Buffalo" Smith will handle mostly new country and southern rock along with various special topics. "Buffalo" is a marvel.
...As I write this, I've just received sad word that Michael B. Smith's father passed away today. Please send your condolences. Those of us at Swampland will surely gather around the family during this dark time. Keep his family in your prayers. I hate to end on that note, but the truth is a bitter pill to swallow. In light of his loss, I'll cut this short. We'd like to extend a Happy Holidays to you all. Until next time...over & out, James Calemine
