Latest Releases From James McMurtry and Otis Redding
2/27/08
On Monday evening I conducted an interview with the great Texas singer/songwriter/guitarist James McMurtry. McMurtry's fine new record, Just Us Kids, is set for release in April. We spoke about his new record, Cormac McCarthy (he's been a fan unlike most of the new No Country For Old Men come-latelys), songwriting, mercury levels in Texas water, politics, his father-writer Larry McMurtry and other sharp topics.
James McMurtry ranks as a great songwriter and storyteller--Just us Kids is the latest testimony to that obvious fact. Among other accomplishments, John Mellencamp involved James McMurtry in his film, Falling From Grace. McMurtry's a force...I look forward to getting his stories out there. Introduce yourself to a great drummer by reading my recent interview with Widespread Panic's Todd Nance. However, my Jim Dickinson interview now needs tending...so look for that first week of March.
I thought I'd pass along this tidbit...Rhino Records is releasing (April 22) Otis Redding's classic album Otis Blue. This landmark soul release--complete with alternate takes, b-sides, live tracks--all previously unreleased should pack a mean punch. Look for that Otis soon also on Mystery And Manners.
Until next time,
