GRITZ Movie Reviews: Cloverfield, The Bucket List and Atonement

Remember the buzz when The Blair Witch Project first came out? There was a reason for it. A scary idea, shot in a way that looked like your dumb brother was operating the video camera. Same thing with Cloverfield. The whole story is taken from one video tape shot by a couple of yuppie dudes during an attack on New York by the nastiest sea creature ever, like Godzilla with tentacles. Oh, and by the way, she has a blue million baby boogers right off the bat, which only add to the mayhem.
The hurky jerky camera work adds to the nervous tension and creates quite a few little spooky moments. As one guy races across Manhattan to rescue his one and only love, the US military plans to “hammer down” and take out all of Manhattan in order to destroy the haint.
Very good. Very different. That’s what I like. But that ending stuck with me, and walking out of the theatre to the sounds of static and no music made it even more eerie.

THE BUCKET LIST
Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman rule in this tale of two guys who are both dying of cancer. The only difference is, Freeman is an auto mechanic and Nicholson is a filthy rich owner and builder of hospitals. The friendship the two men forge is undeniable, and when they decide to make a list of things they want to do before they die, the action really kicks in. From sky diving to racing hot rods, to traveling all around the world, the unlikely duo put some serious living into a short period of time.
It’s a great movie about friendship, love, family and mortality, with a whole lot of laughs provided by Nicholson and Freeman.

ATONEMENT
There’s no wonder why Atonement is creating such an Oscar buzz. The acting is great, the story is compelling and the costumes and scenery of 1935 England are astounding. Sure it’s a love story, but it’s much more than that. It’s the story of one young girl’s little white lie, and how it completely changes three lives forever. At least three lives.
James McAvoy, hot on the heals of his excellent performance in The Last King of Scotland, stars as Robbie Turner, the educated but lower class handyman around the Tallis mansion. In true fairy tale style, Robbie falls for the beautiful and rich young Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley). When they finally get their groove on in the home library, Cecilia’s 13 year old sister Briony walks in and becomes scarred for life. When one of the visiting kids is attacked in the woods, Briony says the attacker was Robbie, which of course, it wasn’t. He is sent to prison, and ends up fighting in the war as an option rather than staying in a cell.
Robbie’s entire life is about reuniting with the love of his life, and he will stop at nothing to return to her.
Vanessa Redgrave turns in a stellar performance at the end of the film as the aged Briony, adding twists and turns to the story all the way until the end of the film.
It’s a great film, but don’t look for a happy ending. It ends on a somber note, with people leaving the theater drying their eyes with tissue. Sure to rack up the Oscars.
