Nashville Cats
Posted: Dec 11, 2006I spent most of last week in Nashville and man oh man was it ever fun. I was invited by my friends at SIRIUS Satellite radio to join Hillbilly Jim as his special online guest to talk about GRITZ and our merger with Swampland, and to share a few southern rock road stories. The show aired on Saturday and Sunday, December 9 and 10th, and will eventually be archived on the Little Steven Website.
I had a great time with Steve Popovich, Jr and Hillbilly Jim, and as an added bonus, I ran into Bluegrass living legend J.D. Crowe who was doing a guest shot on the SIRIUS Bluegrass channel. How cool is that? Mr. Crowe is not only the “King of Bluegrass Banjo,” he is also a heck of a nice man.
I spent a day with my buddy Donnie Winters (Winters Brothers Band) and was kindly invited over to dinner with him and his lovely wife and sons. They hooked me up with some mighty fine Southern style meatloaf and greens. Yum! Donnie dug into the memorabilia suitcase and shared some Winters Brothers memories. Man it was fun. They also offered suggestions on real estate for my planned move to Nashville. Good friends, those Winters.
The next day I put the Honda in the wind, due North, about 30 minutes out from Music City, to the Portland, TN. Home of my friend Lee Bogan, an old South Carolina boy who hit it big playing lead guitar for Joe Diffie, and co-writing the huge country hit “Honky Tonk Attitude.” These days, Lee is touring with Dr. Hook featuring Ray Sawyer.
We ha been wanting to do a songwriting session, and we finally got our opportunity. We wrote a country song together that I feel real good about, called “Good Ol’ Boys Ain’t All Bad.” Now we need to get it to Van Zant and let them hear it. It’s perfect for Donnie and Johnny!
Lee and I did the Chinese thing with his sweet wife at lunch time, and went back to writing. Later, we drove to Wal Mart, and I was blown away that Wal Mart was in Kentucky. I had not really given much thought to the fact that Portland is just minutes from the Kentucky line. I don't believe I have ever been in Kentucky. Nice people up there.
I said my goodbyes to Lee, and stayed over in a Portland hotel, then drove back home on Saturday. It was another fun GRITZ road trip. We love to travel!
Gregg Allman turned 59 on December 8th. Happy belated birthday to brother Gregg…
