Thelonious Monk's North Carolina Roots

Yesterday marked 90 years since the birth of Thelonious Monk in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Monk, a purveyor of jazz music, spent his first five years in North Carolina before his family moved to New York. Those closest to him said Thelonious was always proud of his southern roots. I found this interesting bit on NPR this morning. I'd like to send a cheers out to Thelonious and a Happy Belated birthday to the magician.
Another jazz legend, John Coltrane, was also born in North Carolina. Coltrane and Monk made great recordings together and felt a kinship with the other since they hailed from the same state. These musicians were very cognizant of the haunting music indigenous to the south, and they employed it to create jazz...
