Music Reel - Black Crowes, Music Maker, Warren Haynes, and Daniel Hutchens

Posted: Dec 09, 2006

The Black Crowes completed the final leg of their rockin' fall tour--considering two key members (guitarist Marc Ford and keyboardist Ed Harsch) departed--in November as well as Chris Robinson's unfortunate matrimony tabloid exposure. The Crowes recently released The Lost Crowes--two brilliant CDs they recorded, but scrapped, in the 90's. A new Black Crowes CD is slated for 2007...

The venerable, non-profit North Carolina organization Music Maker Relief Foundation, just released three great new discs: Mr. Drink House's--Drink House To Church House Volumes 1 & 2 along with Alabama Slim & Little Freddie King's The Mighty Flood. Also, check out Thomas Brothers' inimitable new book Louis Armstrong's New Orleans.

Government Mule/Allman Brothers guitarist Warren Haynes' 18th annual Christmas Jam in Asheville, North Carolina, occurs on December 16. This charity benefit--all star jam--usually winds down around dawn. This year's musical guests include Government Mule, Dave Matthews, The Taj Mahal Trio, John Popper, Randall Bramlett, Audley Freed, Marty Stuart, Colonel Bruce Hampton, Mickey Raphael, New Orleans Social Club, Dave Schools, and others. Government Mule will perform at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on December 29, 30, and 31. On separate evenings, Los Lobos, The North Mississippi All-Stars, and reggae legend Toots Hibbert will open shows for the Mule; the December 31 show, "The Dub side of the Mule", will feature Hibbert rendering reggae versions of Mule songs.

Daniel Hutchens--from the Athens, Georgia, rock & roll outfit Bloodkin--released his second solo CD, Lovesongs For Losers, in October on Autumn Tone Records. In other Athens music news, The Drive By Truckers will play New Year's Eve in Atlanta at the Variety Playhouse, while their musical brethren Widespread Panic will perform at Phillips Arena. Folks in Atlanta always face difficult musical decisions on New Year's. Allman Brothers/Eric Clapton slide wizard Derek Trucks will perform with his lovely wife Susan Tedeshi at Atlanta's Fabulous Fox Theatre on December 31. James Calemine

Hey Justin,
Thanks for stopping by...I'm not in a position to state why Marc & Ed left the Crowes. However, the tabloid exposure I mentioned concerning Chris Robinson was the unfortunate fact he and Kate Hudson were hounded by paparazzi during a brutal time for them. Let the music do the talking, eh?
Daniel Hutchens is an old friend and yes Bloodkin still rock & roll. In fact, they play the 40 Watt Club in Athens on Friday, December 22. Adios, JC

Why did Marc and Ed leave the Crowes? Also, what tabloid exposure do you speak of with Chris?

Thanks for the info! I'll have to go out and buy the Hutchens CD now that I know its out there. Is Bloodkin still around?
