SPF Friday Fishwrap-up: LeBatard vs. Galloway

Posted: Sep 14, 2007

Another great southern tradition is writing.  We have a whole section called Discourse that is dedicated to this pursuit.

Newpapers (aka fishwraps) around the Footprint have great sportswriters that deserve to be read, and sometimes needled.

THE LEAD OFF

Dan LeBatard has been with the Miami Herald for many years.  He has risen from local columnist to sports radio host and ESPN personality.  Dan is a great writer.  The Herald is lucky to have him and a few other great columnists like Greg Cote.  However, Dan will never play to the deeper south of the Footprint.

His latest column compares Bill Belichick to Barry Bonds because of the recent allegations about the Patriots stealing signals.  SPF finds this whole thing fairly laughable.  Randy Galloway seems unaffected by the whole business.  I think that is far more in line with the deeper South of the Footprint.

From recruiting shenanigans in college football and basketball to illegal "tweaking" done by NASCAR teams all the time, the Footprint expects and secretly supports this kind of behavior.  The old credo of "if you're not cheating, you're not trying" plays well down South.
