GRITZ Movie Reviews: Yuma a Winner, Shoot 'em Up and Death Sentence Violent/Escapist

I can’t even remember how long it has been since I have seen a real honest to God western movie. This one is excellent, with Russell Crowe as Ben Wade, a Billy the Kid type of outlaw, who ends up arrested and in route to catch a prisoner train to Yuma.

Christian Bale, Alan Tudyk, and Peter Fonda are among the cast that help to make 310 To Yuma a really, really good film.

It’s a story of a rancher (Bale) who finds himself indebted to the wrong people, and just how far he will go to save the family and the ranch.

Excellent script and brilliant cinematography.

SHOOT ‘EM UP

There is something in Hollywood called “suspending your disbelief.” That is, we know a giant lizard isn't walking through the streets of New York City tearing down buildings, like we know Karl Childers didn’t really hack Dwight Yoakim to bits with a lawn mower blade. We suspend our disbelief, and enjoy the ride.

Well sir, Shoot ‘Em Up asks you to triple that disbelief suspension, as Clive Owen leaps across the tops of tall buildings while holding an infant in one arm and a gun in the other hand, while being shot at. Not to mention the scene where “Mr. Smith” shoots a guy by holding bullets between his fingers and sticking them into a fire. Yeah. Right.

Still, I found Shoot ‘Em Up to be a wonderful escapist fantasy, full of guns and one liners that were sometimes funny, sometimes a tad on the silly side.

Paul Giamatti steels the show as the bad guy who keeps getting cell calls from his wife, trying to keep the home fires burning while plowing down every man who stands in his way. He truly plays the part of a creep with gusto. Fun, escapist, boys with guns. Light on plot, heavy on bullet holes.

DEATH SENTENCE

Kevin Bacon stars as a white collar worker with a beautiful wife, two fine sons and a seemingly perfect life, until one fateful night at a gas station when his son is offed by a street gang in an initiation.

The death of his hockey-star son burns Bacon, and he sets out for revenge, never stopping to think about the repercussions on the remaining family members.

The action is non stop, and there is a massive body count.

Interesting to note that John Goodman plays a character light years removed from Dan Conner, a sleazy underground gangster with enough fire power to wage war on a small country.
