1. The college sports “arms race" never seems to slow down. Whether it’s upgrading a current facility or building a new practice complex to ‘wow’ recruits, schools in our Swampland footprint are always looking to be bigger and newer than their rivals. The effect that the Nick Saban signing and the Florida national titles have had on the collegiate landscape cannot be overstated. An interesting article in the Jackson Clarion-Ledger looks at the uphill battle the Mississippi schools have to fight to keep up with their SEC brethren. As coach’s salaries continue to escalate, you have to wonder if the big conferences will separate even further into ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’. Additionally, the recent success of the Gator program may have had an effect on Florida State, who will part ways with Athletic Director Dave Hart.

2. Optimism seems to be rampant in the Bluegrass State these days. Hoops has obviously always been King in Kentucky, but after UK and Louisville have both had double-digit losses the last two seasons, the forecast looks positive moving forward. Billy Gillispie’s recruiting has re-energized the Big Blue Nation, and the Cardinals will be a preseason Top 10 pick. However, basketball won’t be the only sport played at a high level in the Commonwealth this year. Kentucky looks to have their best football team in years, and Louisville has a legitimate Heisman candidate in quarterback Brian Brohm. It looks like this fall will bring more excitement to Kentucky than just preseason basketball.

3. It's always tough to see great competitors slowed by physical ailments. And many times the hardest thing for those players to do is know when it’s time to shut it down. The same drive and toughness that make them great can force them to playing through too much pain. Two SEC legends with neck injuries may have to face that decision soon. The Bengals recently issued a statement that former Georgia Bulldog David Pollack will not play this season. Earlier in the spring, former Vols legend Al Wilson was released from the Broncos. Here’s to hoping both men make the right decision for their long-term future. 

4. Many things have gone wrong for the Braves this season from Andruw Jones’ season slump to the many pitching injuries. Even with the adversity, Terence Moore of the AJC still likes the Braves to win the East. I’m not sure that Atlanta’s starting pitching will hold up, but I do agree on one thing: Bobby Cox will always give a team the best chance to win. I hope the Braves’ fans in Atlanta and throughout the South appreciate what they have in baseball’s 4th most winning manager of all time. If the players can stay healthy, Cox will have them in the race with the Mets until the very end.

5. It’s been an interesting offseason for the NBA in South Florida. After being spurned by Billy Donovan, the Orlando Magic have gone out and tried to excite their fans by spending $200 million on Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis. It will be paramount to the franchise’s future that these two players can lead the team deep into the Playoffs, especially since ownership is looking for a new downtown arena. Meanwhile, Greg Cote says the Miami Heat need some quality youth. With Mo Williams agreeing to return to Milwaukee, it looks like the aging Heat may have trouble sustaining the momentum from their 2006 Championship. 

6. I thought I would end the Six Pack with a couple of positive stories. The AJC has a great piece on the meaning Hank Aaron has in his hometown of Mobile, Alabama. Even with Barry Bonds near the record, there is no doubt who the Home Run King is, and will continue to be, in Mobile. Another positive message comes from Tony Dungy who recently spoke to a Bible Fellowship in the Dallas Area. Instead of basking in the glow of his Super Bowl win, Dungy is speaking to men around the nation about being better fathers.
