The Best Radio On The Internet, The Mighty Field of Vision

Posted: Mar 16, 2007 Whatever happened to radio anyhow? I mean, radio today just plain sucks. Sure, you can find some interesting programming here and there on public radio, and the satellite radio is good if you are willing to buy an actual satellite radio and then pay a monthly fee. Even then, there is very little to get excited about.

Nowadays, it seems more folks are opting to just play CD’s while driving or working, or plug in the old iPod and enjoy their music that way.

As for me, I love to listen to music while I work on my Mac, and it used to be that I would simply insert a CD into my computer’s disc drive and rock out while writing. Well, at the risk of sounding like an info-mercial, I am here today to offer you an alternative to the bland classic rock radio station that plays the same twelve songs every day, hour after hour.

Internet radio. Yes, it’s free. Yes, it rocks. And yes, there are a lot of great stations to choose from. But if you like Swampland, if you love your Gritz, and if you are a died in the wool fan of Southern music, there is one web radio station that rises above the rest. The Mighty Field of Vision, broadcasting world wide out of Decatur, Alabama.

The radio station was founded a few years ago by Alabama native John D. Wyker, as an extension of his Mighty Field of Vision, a non-profit organization that was established for the purpose of aiding down and out musicians.

If the name Wyker sounds familiar, it may be due to his 1972 Top 40 hit “Motorcycle Mama,” by Sailcat, a group he co-founded. Or it may be the familiarity of one of his original songs, like “Baby Ruth,” recorded by Delbert McClinton with Bonnie Bramlett, Alex Taylor and many others.

MFOV Radio plays great music 24/7. Artists like Eddie Hinton, Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, The Capricorn Rhythm Section, Michael Buffalo Smith (another shameless plug!), Howler, Donnie Fritts, Tony Joe White, The Allman Brothers Band, and hundreds of other Southern artists.

Good Southern music, uninterrupted, and all free. How much better does it get? All I’m saying is, check ‘em out and decide for yourself. As for me and my Macintosh, we’ll keep MFOV tuned in every day, listening for that sweet soul music and Muscle Shoals magic.
