Music Maker Relief Foundation: A Treasure Trove of American Music

Posted: Mar 08, 2007

'Blues will never die because it is a spirit. It is an uplift and the way you feel it, that is the way it is. And it brings a lot of joy to people. Music is made to make happiness, make you smile and forget your troubles. In the Good Book it says to make a joyful noise. It doesn't say what kind of noise, just as long as you make one. So that is about the size of it. That is what we are trying to do."
              -Guitar Gabriel

Music Maker Relief Foundation exists as a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting old music pioneers with life maintenance and musical opportunities. Music Maker functions as America's living blues revival...a cosmic jubilee...a country & blues caravan...a contemporary entity carrying on old traditions.

I've known Music Maker president Tim Duffy nine years--as long as I've been writing about the organization--and he's become a purveyor of modern day field recording. His state of the art recording equipment provides a sonic clairty and beauty to these salt-of-the-earth artists' organic songs.

Musicians such as B.B. King, Taj Mahal, the Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton extended assistance to the foundation in the past. Music Maker's formidable roster includes over 200 artists (an "orchard full of diamonds")and released over 70 CDs. Duffy's vaults contain hundreds of unreleased recordings, and he discovered almost every one of the Music Maker recipients.

Music Maker epitomizes a living blues institution. Swampland's Music Maker archived CD reviews include Guitar Gabriel, Lee Gates, Cool John Ferguson, Cora Mae Bryant, Mudcat, Frank Edwards, Beverly "Guitar" Watkins, Cootie Stark, Clyde Langford, Etta Baker, Pure Fe, Sisters of the South, and Dave McGrew. More will soon follow...

In this Swampland interview Tim Duffy discusses his early recording experiences and extensive travels as a folklorist up to Music Maker's conception, as well as present day ongoings. Duffy reveals Music Maker's mission, extensive archives, recent developments, upcoming events, more artist discoveries, and future plans. Peruse their website, and familiarize yourself with their artists and the cause. Duffy's timeless book, Portraits and Songs From the Roots of America tells Music Maker's story, and proves an enduring gift. The well never runs dry at Music Maker...
