As One Gritz To Another

I remember in our pre-swampland.com days, when we first started Gritz online, some guy e-mailed me to tell me that he was enjoying the magazine, and was “honored” that we named the magazine after his band, Gritz. At the time, I had no idea what they guy was talking about. I thought he must be crazy or just yanking my chain.

Then, a few years later, while scouring the used records bins at Horizon Records here in Greenville, I ran across the vinyl album. called Quick Gritz. The store’s owner, my friend Gene Berger, filled me in on some of the details regarding Gritz. Seems they formed in 1973 while they were students here in Greenville, SC at Furman University.

The band originally intended to perform only traditional bluegrass, but soon they found themselves covering any song that they could put their own spin on. This during the days of The Earl Scruggs Revue and New Grass Revival. All three of these groups were light years ahead of their time, mixing counter culture and rock sensibilities with traditional bluegrass.

Quick Gritz was recorded in Atlanta at Mylon LaFevere’s studio, and features cover art by MAD Magazine artist Jack Davis, the same cartoonist who drew the 1972 album cover art for Sailcat’s Motorcycle Mama.

Traditional tunes here include “Little Sadie,” “Sunny Side of Life,” “She’s More to Be Pitted.” Side one concludes with an awesome Dixie Medley that includes “Dixie,” “Are You from Dixie,” and a scorching instrumental, “Dixie Breakdown.” Speaking of ahead of their time, Gritz kick off side two with a bluegrass rendition of “Rock Around the Clock,” a very nice cover of Hank William’s “Lovesick Blues” and a mighty, mighty fine hoedown on Jimmy Martin’s “Tennessee.” The set closes with a smoking “Orange Blossom Special.”

It's an amazing slab of wax from a band with a heck of a good name, Gritz.
