A Note On Georgia Native Danny Whitten
"Cowgirl In the Sand" filtered through the speakers today, and I thought of Columbus, Georgia, native Danny Whitten. Whitten served as the lead guitarist for the group Crazy Horse. Whitten later collaborated with Neil Young. Whitten died in 1972 at 29.
Neil Young once told artist Sandy Mazzeo: "Hey, every musician has one guy on the planet that he can play with better than anyone else. You only get one guy. My guy was Danny Whitten..."
Some say Young wrote "Needle And the Damage Done" about Whitten. The two wrote "(Come On Baby) Let's Go Downtown" and "I Don't Want To Talk About It" together.
Whitten's most notable collaborations with Young include the albums Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and After The Goldrush. Many years later, Neil Young & Crazy Horse Live at the Fillmore was released, and captures the guitarists' live chemistry. Whitten also played in The Rockets and with various other artists.
In June, Neil Young and Crazy Horse will release their latest album Americana. Young's memoir is on the way this fall.
