Posted: Sep 21, 2011

The world premiere of Out of the Dirt, a documentary film about the life of Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Rick Bragg, will be held at the IMAX Theare in the McWane Science Center in Birmingham, Alabama on Monday, September 26.

Rick Bragg's family background has been famously and brilliantly chronicled in his books and other writings. Now comes a film biography of this acclaimed storyteller/journalist/teacher/Pulitzer Prize winner that every fan simply should not miss. This particular event, sponsored by Alabama Booksmith, is sold out, but do not despair. You can still purchase tickets to see Out of the Dirt in North Alabama.

You can reserve your tickets now for Rick Bragg Day in Muscle Shoals on Monday, October 17, hosted by North West Shoals Community College. The film Out of the Dirt will be shown at 10 a.m. at the Ritz Theater in Sheffield, Alabama. At 11:30 there will be  lunch with Rick Bragg and a book signing. Call 256-331-2515 for ticket information.

You may also attend "An Evening with Rick Bragg" at the Princess Theatre in downtown Decatur, Alabama, on Thursday, December 8, at 7:30 PM. Following his talk, Bragg will sign his books. Contact the Princess Theatre in Decatur for tickets.

Rick Bragg is renowned for his non-fiction books, especially those about his family in Alabama. Bragg, who was born in Piedmont, Alabama and grew up in the small community of Possum Trot, has authored five books in addition to his collected newspaper stories Somebody Told Me (2000). His books include All Over but the Shoutin,' Ava's Man, The Prince of Frogtown, I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story, and The Most They Ever Had.

Bragg won the Pulitzer Prize in 1996 for Feature Writing for his work at The New York Times. He is one of Alabama's most popular storytellers, and he is also a recipient of the coveted Harper Lee Award. Currently, Bragg is teaching in the Journalism Dept at the University of Alabama and writing for Southern Living magazine.

I will be blogging on Swampland about the event in Birmingham when I return home on Tuesday, September 27.
