Next weekend (June 3-4) will mark the third anniversary of the annual Billy Reid Shindig in Florence, Alabama. Billy Reid is an internationally known fashion designer with six stores located nationwide from New York City to Dallas who now calls Florence home. His flagship store and corporate headquarters are located at 114 North Court Street in the heart of downtown Florence. Since returning to Florence, AL, Reid has become renowned as a benefactor of the arts, sponsoring all manner of musical and artistic venues and supporting emerging musicians.
This year Billy Reid expanded his Shindig to include SXSW in Austin, TX, where, with K-Swiss, he sponsored the dynamic new duo The Civil Wars. John Paul White of The Civil Wars was born in Loretta, TN, but claims Florence as his home.
For the past two years, Billy Reid has thrown a Shindig in Florence during the first weekend in June. This year there will be a free concert at Mobile Plaza, downtown Florence, on Friday night, June 3, beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday night The Oxford American magazine returns to Alabama for the second installment of ABALABIP and joins with Billy Reid to present a benefit concert for the Alabama Music Hall of Fame Featuring the Dexateens, G-Slide, Candi Staton, and The Decoys. The Decoys include "Swamper" David Hood, who also happens to be the father of Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers).
The concert will be held at the historic Shoals Theatre on Seminary Street in downtown Florence at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 4. Tickets ($20 each) for the Saturday night concert can be purchased at the Shoals Theater web site.
