The first annual Swamptown Getdown Music Festival will take place on the vast Okefenokee Fair Grounds, just minutes from the fabled Okefenokee Swamp this weekend on March 11 & 12. The weekend will offer the full festival experience with RV parking as well as primitive and powered camping available on site. Many vendors will occupy the grounds including food and drink, jewelry, music, clothing and original artwork. Two-day weekend passes available NOW at www.swamptowngetdown.com.
On Friday the musical line-up includes Lazy Lightning, Mojo Bone, Farm Hands Can, Honey Blue, Uncle Dave and the Younguns, The Fritz, Hayshaker and The Woodgrains. On Saturday, the musical entertainment consists of The Other Guys, Adafe Trio, Brethren, Fester Haygood’s King Cotton Band, Secret Sunrise, Levi Lowry & The Community House Band, Laney Strickland, Betsy Franck & The Bareknuckle Band, Sean Clark, The Barefoot Hookers, The Heap and The Newfanglers.
Sate At Home Productions has been presenting events for 15 years running, including the nationally acclaimed Gram Parsons Guitar Pull, which draws artists and attendees from all over the world. Mr. Dave Griffin spearheads that organization. The Parsons tribute festival focuses on his musical impact and the artists who've been influenced by his "Cosmic American" take on Country-Rock. As well as providing a good time, The Getdown strives to give back to the community, serving as a fund-raiser for the high school band. It is hoped that the proceeds from this event will facilitate the growth of the already established music scene in the southeast area.
Today Swamptown Getdown organizer and Hayshaker member, Josh Sharpe, told me about the spirit of this festival. “We want a big coming together—like a family event. The music scene here in Waycross is a tight group of four or five bands with a few added to the circle. We all try to get together and help everyone with music ventures and make it funs for music fans. We want to cultivate a family vibe, but we also want to showcase independent music in our area. We all feel strongly at this point about independent music because so much popular music is insincere and over-produced. So, we’re all looking forward to this first Swamptown Getdown Music Festival…”
