Levon Helm On The Road
On Saturday, February 26, Levon Helm hosted one of his ‘Midnight Rambles’ featuring old Band-mate Garth Hudson. February proved busy for Helm. On March 4 & 5, the Levon Helm Band will play gigs with Lucinda Williams in Toronto. Throughout the spring, Helm will host ‘Rambles’ as well play various shows.
Keep an eye out for the Helm documentary titled Ain’t In It For My Health, which covers Helm’s Arkansas roots, the demise of the Band, bankruptcy, throat cancer and the deaths of Richard Manuel and Rick Danko. Helm’s book—This Wheel’s On Fire—ranks as one of my favorite autobiographies. Helm also acted in timeless films such as Coal Miner’s Daughter, The Right Stuff, In The Electric Mist and Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada.
As a throat cancer survivor, Helm released Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt, both of which earned him a Grammy. Besides using his barn to host ‘Rambles’, Helm also allows bands, such as The Black Crowes, to record albums at his studio. The Crowes film, Cabin Fever, documented their recording sessions at Helm’s musical sanctuary. Helm’s career demonstrates a fine journey through the heart of American music.
