R.L. Burnside & the Indestructible Beat of the Blues

R.L. Burnside ranks as one of America’s seminal bluesman. Born during 1926 in Oxford, Mississippi, Burnside spent most of his life in the hills of North Mississippi. His slashing-style of powerful music evokes images of dangerous juke joints, hypnotic women and characters that ask for no mercy, and give none…

Burnside learned to play guitar from his legendary neighbor Mississippi Fred McDowell. Burnside’s extended family (the Sound Machine Band) became quite influential in the hill country along with the musical families of Junior Kimbrough and Jim Dickinson. Burnside recorded his first album for Fat Possum Records in 1992.

Burnside died in 2005, but writer Eddie Dean’s article, “One More Trickster Gone: R.L. Burnside & The Indestructible Beat of the Blues”, captures the essence of Burnside’s spirit and music. It’s a poignant article featured on a favored publication of mine—Arthur Magazine. Seek out R.L. Burnside…

See you tomorrow,
